1. Introduction

This document is designed to help product reviewers understand what AIRcables are as well as what they can be used for, how they are marketed, how they are sold, and background information on the company that makes them.

Wireless Cables Inc AIRcable products solve real customer problems – the difficulties, inconveniences, and costs associated with connecting devices using cables. Our vision is to make life simpler for people using ‘devices that have to be connected’. AIRcables replace peripheral cables using wireless technology for connectivity, while remaining as easy to plug-in as cables, with minimum or no new software and device intelligence needed.

This reviewers guide is meant to be used in conjunction with the AIRcable quick start guide included with the product, if you wish to jump right in and start using the AIRcable please read that first.

2. What is an AIRcable?

An AIRcable is a pair of wireless devices that provide a point-to-point wireless connection between a computer and an attached electronic device such as a PDA, Cell Phone, scanner, printer or peripheral.

Unlike traditional, often costly hard-wired cabling, AIRcable products deliver a simple, convenient, cost-effective, secure and adaptive way of connecting devices to your computer, or to one another. AIRcable products untangle your life without adding complexity.

Unlike other wireless networking devices, AIRcable products appear to the system as actual cables and do not require wireless connection software, configuration, network management, or other new complex things.

Another one of the things that is unique and different about the AIRcable devices is their ability to connect from one device type to another, for example attaching a serial cable port to a USB port. This offers two benefits and advantages:

1. First in many cases it allows using device support software already present on both systems, eliminating the need to install and configure additional software.
2. Second, it allows connecting older systems with older device type support to newer systems with newer device type support. There is a patent in progress on this technique of using device-based firmware technology to map from one cable type to another.

AIRcables have the following characteristics:

• Simple - AIRcable products are simple; just plug them in and they work. In most cases, beyond installing a USB driver, they do not require any type of setup, configuration or software.
  
• Unique - AIRcable products don't require you to know or learn anything new about networks or device configuration and connection.
  
• Convenient - AIRcable products are convenient; they are small devices that work with your existing devices. No more wrestling with a tangle of cables, changing cables in your office or home, or setting up a wireless network.
  
• Compatible - AIRcable products are compatible; they let you use the latest wireless communications technology with your existing computer equipment and devices.
  
• Cost-Effective - AIRcable products are cost-effective; they work without purchasing any additional hardware, software or networking equipment, and eliminate the expense of costly re-wiring your office or home.
  
• Secure - AIRcable products are secure; they incorporate the latest communications technology, Bluetooth, which provides the secure delivery of your private information without the possibility of interception and eavesdropping.
  
• Low Power Consumption – AIRcable devices require very low power to operate, and usually draw that power from the devices that they are connected to – a key benefit is extended battery time for PDAs (over 802.11 alternatives).
  
• Small Format – AIRcable devices are small rugged devices that are typically much smaller than other comparable wireless solutions.
  
• Low-Radiation - AIRcable devices emit much less radiation than cell phone and 802.11 technologies and are thus attractive to customers concerned about the effects of radiation.

Company and Vision

Wireless Cables, Inc. is a private company located in Santa Cruz, California that develops wireless devices intended to replace cables that connect electronic equipment. It designs, develops, manufactures and sells products into consumer, small-office-home-office (SOHO), and business markets and also plans to license technology directly to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

The Company has developed a unique point of view for its product and services, based on the attitude and perception that traditional (hard-wired) computer-to-device cabling is an unnecessary thing of the past. In the same way that, thanks to cordless-phones, individuals are no longer tethered to their home phones - computer peripherals and/or electronic devices, like hand-held computing devices, printers, digital cameras and the like need not be tethered as well. Cutting the cord on computer peripherals, like printers, scanners, and the like is equally beneficial as it elements the unnecessary tangle or costly cabling of these devices to computers.

Product Description

 

AIRcable Serial-Male and Serial-Female

AIRcable Serial module gives any serial device Bluetooth capabilities. Use it alone to connect a serial device to any Bluetooth-ready device or in combination with another AIRcable product for a specific purpose. The Serial module comes in male or female type DB9 connectors and runs the latest AIRcable software.

 

AIRcable USB™

AIRcable Serial-USB™ module gives any USB™ device Bluetooth capabilities. There is no Bluetooth software required that must be installed on the PC. Use it alone to connect a USB™ device to any Bluetooth-ready device or in combination with another AIRcable product for specific purposes. The module comes pre configured to automatically connect to the AIRcable Serial Male.

 

AIRcable for Nextel

The AIRcable for Nextel™ is a Bluetooth(R) accessory for data applications on Nextel phones. It adds Bluetooth functionality to many Nextel phones without the need of changing the phone's firmware. We developed two versions which are compatible with Motorola iDEN phones—Condor and Falcon. (Will work with non-iDEN Motorola phones too.)

 

AIRcable HiFi Headphones

AIRcable for Serial-Serial provides a fast, convenient way of connecting any computer equipped with a serial port to other serial (RS-232) based devices such as laboratory equipment, point-of-sale devices, scanners and printers without using any cables. The AIRcable Serial is available as either Serial-Male or Serial-Female. The AIRcable for Serial-Serial includes two connectors: one that plugs into the serial port of your computer (DTE), and one that plugs into the serial (RS-232) port on your peripheral device (DCE).

 

AIRcable for Serial-USB™

AIRcable for Serial-USB provides a fast, convenient way of connecting any computer equipped with a USB port to any serial (RS 232) based devices such as laboratory equipment, point-of-sale devices, scanners and printers without using any cables. AIRcable for Serial-USB includes two distinct connectors: one that plus into the USB port of your computer, and one that plugs into the serial (RS 232) port on your peripheral device (DCE). The AIRcable Serial is available as either Serial-Male or Serial-Female.

 

AIRcable for Serial-Null Modem

AIRcable for Serial-Null Modem provides a fast, convenient way of providing a null-modem connection between any two computers equipped with a serial port. The AIRcable for Serial-Null Modem includes two Serial-Female connectors that plug into the serial port of your computer (DTE).

 

AIRcable for Nextel-Serial

AIRcable for Nextel-Serial provides a fast, convenient way of connecting Nextel cell phones to any serial (RS 232) based devices, and it also supports a user accessible command line interface for configuration accessible from Java software. AIRcable for Nextel-Serial removes the need for physical connection, so you can run the same software that would support a physical cable.
