Support : AIRcable Serial-to-USB™ : Pairing Guide

Introduction

AIRcable Serial-to-USB™ provides a fast, convenient way of connecting any computer with a USB port to any serial (RS 232) based device. The Serial-to-USB™ removes the need of both, a serial to USB adapter cable, and any Bluetooth software on the PC. Because our device runs all the software needed, installation becomes as easy as plugging in the devices, and selecting the COM port.

The AIRcable Serial-to-USB™ comes with two distinct connectors: the AIRcable USB™, which plugs into the USB port of your computer, and the AIRcable Serial-Female, which is a DCE serial module that plugs into the serial (RS 232) port of your peripheral device.

Having devices connected with the AIRcable Serial-to-USB™ allows you to do everything you're use to doing with normal cables: printing, scanning, etc, and all at the speed of a high-bandwidth network connection. By using an AIRcable, you eliminate the unnecessary tangling of cables in your home, or office, while giving you the freedom and flexibility of moving your equipment without re-cabling up to 30-50 ft (the wireless range).

Installation

The AIRcable Serial-to-USB™ defaults to Cable Mode where two AIRcable devices are paired together to create a wireless connection (see website for more Advanced Modes). The devices come pre-paired, making the installation simple. To activate the pair between the two AIRcable devices, follow the steps below:

  1. Put in the CD for driver installation
  2. Plug in the USB device
  3. Plug in the Serial device and power. (The Serial device needs power either through a wall plug or the pin 9. Power consumption is 100mA)
  4. The lights will start blinking, this means they're connecting, wait 20 seconds
  5. If the light is not solid (connected) then press and hold the button on the serial for 5 seconds and wait 30 seconds for the connection to re-establish.

(Note) Do not use the dip switches on the serial device for baud rate, that is controlled only by the PC

(Note) The Hardware Handshake is not PC side, but controlled by a switch on the Serial device.

Once your Serial-to-USB™ device has been setup, the USB creates a virtual serial port. The virtual serial port created uses the USB device to transfer all data to the serial module, and vice versa. All modem control lines are supported. Additional transfer info: 1200-231400 baud, 8 bit, parity: none, even, odd, one or two stop bits.

How to un-pair and re-pair AIRcable Serial-to-USB™

Do step 5 of Installation.

Hardware Handshake

The AIRcable Serial-to-USB™ implements hardware handshake, and has it enabled by default. Because of this, the RTS/CTS lines either have to be connected or must be switched off (disabling hardware handshake). If your device does not support hardware handshake, the switch must be turned off. To turn off hardware handshake, flip the fourth switch on the AIRcable Serial to the down position.
